Farm Stand Re-Opening
Due to extreme temperatures in September and October, we had to delay opening the farm stand as well as the start date for our CSA. With temps being well above average for the past few months, our planting bed temperatures have ranged from 98° to 117°. These are temps we normally don’t experience except in late May or early June.
Our beds are covered with white plastic mulch film with drip irrigation under the plastic. The tape delivers only ½ gallon of water per 10 feet of tape, making it difficult to cool the beds without rotting the roots of the vegetables.
Unfortunately, we do not have overhead irrigation that would allow us to cool the beds multiple times each day. In order to get our field planted and hit our projected start as best we can, we placed hoses and sprinklers between the rows and moved them every few hours throughout the field. The vegetables are finally growing now as expected!
We're looking forward to seeing everyone again soon -- familiar faces and new ones -- and providing the freshest, nutritious, organically grown veggies in our area!
